Vic: new tunnel opening smooth

Melbourne's new 1.6km Domain tunnel has opened for public use, with organisers hailing
its first day of operation a success.

A CityLink spokesman says tunnel traffic averaged about 3,000 vehicles an hour.

Extra police on duty and electronic messages above the lanes ensured a smooth traffic
flow into the tunnel.

The three-lane tunnel, 25 metres underground at its deepest, is part of the $2 billion
CityLink project and connects the Monash Freeway to the Westgate Freeway, carrying inbound
traffic from the south-east to the CBD.

CityLink says using the tunnel cuts a former 20-minute journey to just 90 seconds.

The outbound Burnley tunnel, which will also operate across three lanes, has been
plagued by construction problems including cracks and leaks that have led to the postponement
of its opening.

During an introductory period, travel in the Domain tunnel will be toll-free -- until
after Anzac Day -- and the speed-limit restricted to 60km an hour, rising later to 80km
an hour.
