Fed: Satellite porn channels to face official probe

Television pornography channels beamed into Australia via satellite will come under
the spotlight in a broadcasting watchdog inquiry.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority will contact overseas broadcasters, satellite
providers and their Australian-based marketers to test whether they are breaking local
laws.

Porn movies on subscription channels are available to anyone with a satellite dish,
decoder and smart card for as little as $4 a week.

The content hasn't been vetted by Australian censors, but it's illegal to show pornography
which involves violence, coercion, demeaning behaviour or minors.

Adult services including Free-XTV, Backroom, Sexz.TV and BlueKiss have started to sign
up Australian subscribers and the inquiry will try to establish who the provider is in
terms of broadcasting laws.
