Fed: State governments should provide more NGV incentives
Australian state governments are being urged to provide more incentives to encourage
motorists to convert their family cars to natural gas.
International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles President Dr JEFFREY SEISLER says
Australia is a world leader in converting heavy vehicles to natural gas.
But he says Australia lags behind the world in encouraging owners of light duty cars
to use the cheaper, cleaner compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel.
Dr SEISLER, speaking outside the Asia-Pacific Natural Gas Vehicles Summit in Brisbane,
said state governments can provide a variety of incentives to encourage the growth in
this sector.
The summit has been told that natural gas has a bowser price of 40 cents a litre and
produces less emissions.
Australia also has enough natural gas reserves to supply all of its needs.
Currently there were only 13 public stations and 30 depots - providing CNG to various
business and government fleets - in Australia.
Commonwealth incentives will see another 19 24-hour stations provide CNG over the next
12 months which is expected to triple the number of natural gas vehicles by 2003.
