Civic leaders seek to honor champion of open spaces

A man who more than a century ago championed keeping Grant Park "forever open, clear and free" could soon get an urban oasis on the Chicago River named for him.

For the first time, A. Montgomery Ward, known best for starting the world's first mail-order retail catalog, is on his way to having a park named in his honor to commemorate his more controversial work in the city -- as an environmentalist.
