Fed: Govt targets cheap independents - Brown

Australian Greens Senator BOB BROWN says the government is targeting the independent
senators as the cheapest option for passing its Medicare legislation.

The government is negotiating with the four independents to pass its package but has
also started talks with the Australian Democrats as a second option.

Senator BROWN says a reverse auction is going on where independents are being picked
off for the lowest price.

He says the government knows some of the independents have a big job ahead in being
re-elected this year.
